A portion of the scope of work for this Naval Base Maintenance Project was to replace a series of sidewalks making them ADA compliant to ensure the grade change did not exceed the maximum 1:20 slope requirements and that all intersections were ADA compliant as well. This is a photograph of the work completed at this major intersection that accomplished this task. This phase installed approximately 1100 ft of ADA compliant sidewalk at various locations.
Another scope of work on this project was to design and install two metal canopy coverings, one for the exposed fuel island and the other for the exposed filling station as shown in this photo. The utilization of helical piles prevented any damage to the adjacent wooded area and prevented any trees from being damaged. The 12" diameter x 60 ft. long galvanized helical piles were installed in 10 ft. sections utilizing a mini excavator. The existing concrete paving was not damaged due to the rubberize tracks that were used. The wooded area to the Northeast was considered wetlands and therefore could not be disturbed. Unfortunately, no photographs of the finished products are available.
This photo shows the approximately 45 ft. long ADA compliant pedestrian bridge and approximately 300 ft. ADA compliant sidewalks and respective transitioning intersections that were installed as part of the Naval Air Base Maintenance Project in Belle Chase, Louisiana. The bridge was installed as one contiguous unit and is supported by concrete bulkheads on either side. Because of the strict ADA requirements of this crossing, a high strength concrete mix utilizing a unique admixture for the decking that allowed flexure of the decking and prevent cracking in the event uneven settlement occurred due to the soil conditions in this area.
